Household Toxins

There are various environmental toxins that cause serious effects to human health and our environment. These toxins may be present in our homes. Below are some of the common household toxins which we are not aware of;

Bisphenol A (BPA) – is an organic compound used for polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins production. This is also found in water bottles, baby bottles, plastic wraps and food packaging. According to a study it can cause brain and behavioral effects on fetuses and young children when exposed at certain level.

Flouride – Yes, it’s the fluoride found in toothpaste and sometimes tap water. According to American Dental Association children below two years old are not advisable to use toothpaste with fluoride. It may cause neurotic and potentially tumorigenic if swallowed.

Phthalates- these are substances used to increase the flexibility, transparency and durability of plastics. In the United States, Canada and European Union phthalates are being phased out due to health concerns. These chemicals are usually found in toys, vinyl flooring, detergents, food packaging and shampoos. One of its health hazards according to some studies is an evidence of a link to liver cancers.

Perchlorate – Used in pyrotechnics industry. This chemical is found in drinking water, soil, and sometimes in vegetables. The known health hazard is disruption of thyroid’s hormone production.

Decabromodiphenyl Ether (DECA) – It is a brominated flame retardant that may be used in television industry, synthetic carpets, and upholstery fabric. Effects of this include memory deficits, and hearing defects.

  1. It seems that lately it's hard to avoid most of these toxins, we really need strict regulations on how these products are made.
