But why does light pollution concerns us all?

Light pollution also contributes to air pollution through needless generation of electricity (most of which comes from fossil fuels). This is not only about wasting our natural resources but contributing to environmental impact. The air pollution is one serious problem that affects large segments of the population.

This light pollution even harms nocturnal wildlife. Many species won't even go near an area that has bad lighting. Also, many species will simply stop reproducing if habitat destruction from overly bright lights becomes too severe. It is currently threatens all Florida Sea Turtles.

The light pollution is also said to harm human health and being linked to some serious illness such as breast cancer. It is even thought of as second hand smoke in the 1980's. Back then many people laughed at the idea that one person could smoke... and another person could be harmed. Today, we know that this is in fact the case and can happen too with light pollution.

Light pollution while it is roughly recognized by many has actually contributed to ecological problems. To minimize this, we must help in environmental protection such as saving energy and implementing green habits to our daily living.

1. Everything that has stressed you doesn’t really matter in life. Projects, due dates and disappointments are just part of everyday life and shouldn’t be the reason of not having time with your love ones. What really important in life is your connection to our Creator, to your family and friends. By saying all these things, it doesn’t mean I regretted the hard work. For a while, like others, I forgot what life really means.

2. The world doesn’t stop for your grief. If you are disappointed and unhappy just go on with your life and forget the drama. Being miserable won’t help you overcome obstacles you might just as well be happy and make your time worthwhile.

3. Green living can teach you how to be frugal. I used to be an impulse buyer but when I started my green living project, I learned how to plan my finances and check the labels before buying. It’s hard at first but you'll survive. Every time you want to buy something ask yourself with these questions first, “Do I really need this? Is it environmental?”

4. Saving is all worth the sacrifices. This is something that I wished I should have pay attention to before. Thinking the all money I’ve wasted with my impulse spending before makes me sigh. I just realized that it''s important to be wise when it comes to managing finances.

5. Waking up early is an amazing start. You can do many things when rising early (exception to the night shift people). You don’t have to rush when preparing for work and you’ll have enough time for your morning exercise. Moreover, having the time to watch the sunrise is really a great experience.

A simple example is when using appliances, sometimes we forget to turn them off. If we really want to save the earth, we should start doing it at home. The following are some energy saving tips you can easily follow at home:

1. Unplug. Always unplug any electronic devices when not in use.

2. Use green cleaning products. Always check the label when buying your home cleaning or office cleaning products. Make sure it does not contain environmental toxins.

3. Take shorter showers. Taking shorter showers save a lot of energy at the same time cut costs on your water bill and water heating.

4. Reduce garbage. As much as possible do not buy stuff that you don’t actually need. Learn to recycle bottles, papers, and plastics at home.

5. Organize things. When everything at home is disorganized you tend to consume more. For example, buying things (such as bottle containers, papers, accessories) you thought you don’t have but in truth are only hidden somewhere in your house.

6. Turn off the lights. Always turn off the lights when you are not using them.

Green environment is something that nations endeavor to achieve just to secure a sustainable future. This is a dream that is yet to attain by most nations. We cannot deny the reality that depicts our now beaten world, a reality of various ecological concerns not to mention the aggravating poverty worldwide. According to 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, it is not difficult to forgive the destruction in the past, which resulted from ignorance. He said, "Today, however we have access to more information, and it is essential that we re-examine ethically what we have inherited, what we are responsible for, and what we will pass on to coming generations.” With our today’s technologies we can really do something to help save our environment. When buying your cleaning products it’s still better to read the labels than rely on their “greenwashing” advertisement. A lot of producers claim that their products are eco-friendly however still contains toxics that may affect the environment or human health. Butyl cellosolve: Found in metal polishes and grease removers.

Chlorinated compounds: Found in sanitizing and bleaching agents, dry-cleaning solvents, tub and tile cleaners and toilet-bowl cleaners. The Washington Toxic Coalition’s Philip Dickey warns that one of the most common home accidents involves mixing products containing chlorine bleach with those containing ammonia, which causes a chemical reaction that produces a gas that is highly irritating to the lungs.

Petroleum distillates: Typical ingredients in floor waxes, furniture polishes, degreasers and all-purpose cleaners.

Phthalates: Used in air fresheners and multipurpose cleaners.

Phosphates: Although they have been banned from many products, phosphates still can be found in many automatic- dishwashing detergents.

There are various environmental toxins that cause serious effects to human health and our environment. These toxins may be present in our homes. Below are some of the common household toxins which we are not aware of;

Bisphenol A (BPA) – is an organic compound used for polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins production. This is also found in water bottles, baby bottles, plastic wraps and food packaging. According to a study it can cause brain and behavioral effects on fetuses and young children when exposed at certain level.

Flouride – Yes, it’s the fluoride found in toothpaste and sometimes tap water. According to American Dental Association children below two years old are not advisable to use toothpaste with fluoride. It may cause neurotic and potentially tumorigenic if swallowed.

Phthalates- these are substances used to increase the flexibility, transparency and durability of plastics. In the United States, Canada and European Union phthalates are being phased out due to health concerns. These chemicals are usually found in toys, vinyl flooring, detergents, food packaging and shampoos. One of its health hazards according to some studies is an evidence of a link to liver cancers.

Perchlorate – Used in pyrotechnics industry. This chemical is found in drinking water, soil, and sometimes in vegetables. The known health hazard is disruption of thyroid’s hormone production.

Decabromodiphenyl Ether (DECA) – It is a brominated flame retardant that may be used in television industry, synthetic carpets, and upholstery fabric. Effects of this include memory deficits, and hearing defects.

Waste can be generated in all sorts of ways. The need for waste management measures is now a growing problem of many nations due to continuous increase in population and industrial productions. Landfill, which is the oldest form of waste disposal, has been used mainly over the years particularly by third world countries. However, as what we always see around us, areas for landfills have started to run out and landfill operations have considerably caused great damage to our environment. And with these problems, we cannot just disregard our need for reliable waste management measures. Moreover, solid wastes problem is the number one cause of today’s health issues and destruction of our ecosystems.

In landfill operations alone, the leaching of contaminants out of the soil into groundwater causes damaging effects to many aquatic plants and animals, and worse it even contaminates human drinking water. High concentration of harmful metals (such as lead and cadmium) and other potentially harmful compounds are usually present in landfills. What we can do now is minimize the grade of land pollution that caused by industries and other human activities.

By taking actions and having concrete laws and regulations we can prevent further damages to our environment caused by waste problems. Waste is generated in all sorts of ways. Its composition and volume largely depend on consumption patterns and the industrial and economic structures in place. It is considered to be the end product of both natural and artificial processes such as manufacturing, chemical reactions, and even events in biochemical pathways. With continuous population increase and industrial development waste has become one of the major problems worldwide.
But to other people and industries wastes are not just waste that cause problems in various communities. These wastes can also become a resource and a material supply for producing products. Many industries are now recycling and destroying wastes to be used for their products.

However, we all know that not all wastes are recyclable and there are some wastes that could take million years before they decompose. So how do we get rid of these without harming our environment? Good thing there are now technologies that recycles and destroys wastes in a manner that doesn’t harm the environment. One of these technologies is the biosphere technology, a gasification process wherein it harnesses the combustibility of solid wastes (MSW) to create a heat source that produces super heated steam via boiler. Then this super heated steam will then be used to drive a combination stream turbine/alternator that will generate green electricity. How Biosphere Technology Works?

Biosphere Technology or biosphere gasification technology is defined as a gasification process that destroys solid wastes in a cost effective and environment friendly method. It is an invention of Dr. Christopher McCormack (Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Global Environmental Energy Corporation). Its process has five distinct stages.

Stage One: Municipal solid wastes (MSW) are collected and brought to a centralized Biosphere process facility located at a designated site. Each facility is named as a “One-Stop Shop” providing for up to 100% recycling of the total tonnage of MSW collected. The Biosphere Process facilities are economically viable at 5-8 tons/hr and can be constructed in closed facilities of as little as 3000 square feet. Each Biosphere Process facility is designed to be a standalone facility, with internal air control ensuring it does not emit any prohibited emissions to the atmosphere.

Stage Two: The MSW are sorted to provide separation for compost production, plastics and rubber recovery, metals, and glass. Its aggregate recovery and electrical power generation typically operates at a rate of tons/hr. Each receiving line separates MSW into two feedstock streams comprising putrescible (organic) and non-putrescible (non-organic) materials. Putrescible materials which are usually comprised of 20% by volume are rapidly composted and recycled into high nutrient value soil additives and fertilizers using a proprietary vertical accelerated composter. Meanwhile, the non-putrescible materials are further sorted to allow plastics and rubber recovery at around 10% of volume before being shredded in advance for valuable metal recovery. All of the recoverable aluminum and ferrous metals are removed from the waste stream using rotating trammels equipped with band magnets, and hand picking stations. Sands are removed using a Biosphere Separator 2 which achieves the following separation percentage; metals 3.1%, glass 5.2%, aggregates, concrete, dirt, sand, 8.0% and lastly, residual materials suitable for power generation equal to but not more than 53.7% by volume of the initial MSW.

Stage Three: All other materials in the waste stream is forced through a Biosphere Densifier 3, which compacts the MSW into 20g flakes with 15-20% moisture termed Biosphere Flakes 4 at the rate of 30 tons/hour, these flakes drive the Biosphere Process.

Stage Four: The Biosphere Flakes are converted into 1000 (degree) C, 1800 (degree) C flux using a Biosphere Venturi 5. The process is designated to produce an inert ash which is then recycled into a concrete products for the building industry, thus ensuring up a 100% recycling of all MSW handled through the Biosphere Process completely replacing traditional land filling as a method of waste disposal.

Stage Five: The 1000(degree) C to 1800 (degree) C flux produced in stage four is used to power a 6 MW generating electricity.

I’m sure you must have heard about global warming (an environment issue that shouldn’t be ignored for it might end up destroying the world we live in). If there are things that we should be doing to prevent this from happening, the very first thing, is to start going green.

There are many ways on how to be part of going green campaign; an example is the use of green energy. As explained from the previous post, green energy is an energy produced in a manner that is environment friendly. And the best example of green energy is the electricity generated from biosphere technology.

What is biosphere technology?

Biosphere technology is a gasification process that harnesses the combustibility of municipal solid wastes (msw) to create a heat source that produces super heated steam via boiler, which then drives a combination stream turbine to generate electricity. This green technology also helps in cleaning up the environment for it destroys solid wastes in a cost-effective and safe process. Green energy is referred to energy produced in a manner that does not pollute the environment. It’s a subset of renewable energy that may represent the energy sources and technologies with highest environmental benefits. The usual types of green energy that comes in mind are solar, wind, geothermal and hydro energy. But there are more types of green energy such as nuclear energy, ocean energy, biomass, or biosphere gasification technology.

The main goal of green energy is to generate power with little pollution as much as possible. It’s a great thing that technologies nowadays are improving when it comes to their production process. An example of this technology is the biosphere gasification technology. It’s a gasification process that has no toxic leftovers which cause leachate issues and it uses limited-oxygen environment which limits atmospheric emissions. Biosphere technology also helps clean up the environment by destroying solid wastes to produce green electricity and other by-products.

Thoughts on Global Warming

Carbon emission reduction is not enough to address the problem of global warming. Although many people believe that if we all participate in reducing our carbon footprints it would be possible. Maybe it’s really possible if everyone in this world (particularly the corporate carbon polluters) would be obliged to do so. But in reality, these polluters are even given the right to pollute more. In the Philippines alone, some of its globalization policies are giving way for private sectors to produce and consume more energy from fossil fuels. Just imagine all nations doing the same thing, not only our environment that will be gravely affected but our lives as well. Shouldn’t we all do something now to mitigate the impending effects of global warming?

First, we must understand and solve the underlying cause or root of this environmental crisis in order to implement the right solution. It’s true that the production of energy from fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas is the major source of global warming pollution. But what pushed this thing to happen? Isn’t the greed for economic development? Many could have foreseen this but because of detestable greed for growth they chose to ignore the warnings of our planet’s deterioration. And in order to make a lasting solution for global warming, governments particularly of highly industrialized nations should have reliable economic policies that will not destroy the habitability of this planet and will not risk the lives of many people.

Then, remember that we have a choice… As what Al Gore wrote in his book Our Choice, “We can solve the climate crisis. It will be hard to be sure but if we can make the choice to solve it, I have no doubt whatsoever that we can and will succeed.” We can choose to take action and demand for reliable economic policies or just ignore the threats of global warming that will soon destroy our future.

TGEG Joins Earth Day Celebration at Trinoma

In celebration with the International Earth Day on this month of April, True Green Energy Group (TGEG) joins the upcoming event “Saving Planet Earth Expo and Conference (SPEEC)” on April 23-25, 2010 at Trinoma Mall, Quezon City.
This event is an environmental project that will cover two essential activities, the expo and conference and the reforestation program. It’s a joint project of EX-Link Management and Marketing Corporation, DENR (Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources), Haribon Foundation, Earth Day Network, and Philippines Business for the Environment. SPEEC aims to unify businesses, corporations, institutions and individuals in leading the way to a new stable, environmentally sustainable and prosperous economy. Meanwhile, the Haribon Foundation will lead the reforestation program for Marikina Watershed Reservations, the home to one of the last rainforest in Metro Manila.

Expo activities will include Green Program Forum and Eco Fashion Show “Karikitan sa Kalikasan”. The Green Program Forum will be joined by the 2010 Election Presidentiables and Senatoriables. In this event the electoral candidates will be given time to present their platforms for the environment. Then, following this forum will be the Eco fashion Show wherein several brands with eco-friendly creations will showcase their products made of recycled, organic and indigenous materials.
